Tandem Flights
by Steve Rodrigues
NOTE: I have gone not-for-profit and am not offering commercial tandem flights at this time. I recommend: http://www.sfhanggliding.com or http://www.californiahg.com
Who can fly?
Just about anyone with a sense of adventure! I've had students from 10 years old to 79 years young! Classes will usually have two students per day.
What to bring:
You will want to wear comfortable clothes in layers, and shoes you can run in, preferably with good ankle support. Hat, sunglasses, water and a snack are recommended.
Where we fly:
S.F. Bay Area mountain launches are around 2,000’ above sea level and our flights originate from the location that has the best conditions for that day. Hang gliding flights are subject to Mother Nature; fog, wind strength and direction will ultimately determine our location. I will call the night before and the morning of to confirm location and time.
When:
We will usually meet at the flying site by 11:00 AM. This may change depending on the weather forecast.
How:
I provide all the hang gliding equipment we will need. We will use “SKYPUPY”, my silver 4x4 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck, to transport students and gear up the mountain.
It is appreciated when students bring a friend or family member who can drive the vehicle back down to the landing area for our next flight. The Tacoma is equipped with an automatic transmission, is comfortable and easy to drive!
All tandem flights are conducted by a USHPA certified Tandem Instructor in strict compliance with FAA regulations. |

Each lesson begins with a short ground school followed by an even shorter written test, and the mandatory signing of waivers. Don’t worry, nobody has flunked yet!
After the paperwork is filled out, we will pre-flight the glider, don our flight gear, review flight procedures and walk to launch. We will wait for just the right wind conditions, and when we are ready, we will run off the mountain for the most memorable flight of your life!
Baring any unforeseen circumstances, we will video your flight on an SD memory chip that will be yours to keep!
As with all forms of aviation, hang gliding takes time to learn.
However, you can experience the freedom of flight in one day only by taking a tandem lesson with Master rated pilot Steve Rodrigues!
